Gwent Police receive Savile sex assault claim by woman

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Monday October 15th, 2012.

Gwent Police has passed on a complaint that a woman living in the force area was sexually assaulted by Jimmy Savile.

The woman, who was 16 at the time, now lives in the Gwent area but lived elsewhere at the time of the incident in the 1970s.

The complaint has been passed to the Metropolitan Police team investigating TV personality and DJ Savile, who died last year.

A Gwent Police spokesman said: “We have received an allegation.

“A woman living in the Gwent area has made an allegation of sexual assault.

“She reported it on October 6. It is alleged to have occurred in the 1970s when she was 16 and living outside the force area.

“All the relevant information has been passed to the Metropolitan Police.”

There are reports today that Savile may have abused as many as 60 people with allegations dating back to 1959.

Scotland Yard now has 340 lines of inquiry involving 40 potential victims.

Savile, who died last year aged 84, presented Top of the Pops and Jim’ll Fix It in the 1970s and 1980s. The BBC has also launched two inquiries.
