New library opens in Abercarn

Abercarn’s new library has opened its doors for the first time.

Pupils from Abercarn Primary School wrote poems and took part in story-telling at the launch, which was attended by more than 40 people.

The new library has been developed as a partnership between social housing company Seren, Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Welsh Government and building firm Carn Limited.

The first phase of the development included the construction of 23 homes, while the second phase saw the development of the library with ten apartments for older people above.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, cabinet member for education, said: “This impressive construction is testament to what can be achieved when strong partnerships are created.”

Housing Minister Huw Lewis toured the new library with Caerphilly Council leader Harry Andrews.

Meanwhile, Bargoed Library, which is housed at the former Hanbury Chapel, has celebrated its first year anniversary.

With more than 17,000 visitors in the first month, Caerphilly Council has said Bargoed Library has gone on to enjoy a substantial increase in both visitors and book loans throughout the year.

Cllr Passmore said, “It’s fantastic to see Bargoed Library enjoy such huge success and this is proof that our town centre regeneration projects are delivering real results.”
