Children taking part in a council-backed reading competition have collected their prizes.

Thirty-eight children and their families were invited to attend a special award ceremony at the council’s Penallta House earlier this month.

The annual, summer-long event aims to promote the importance of reading for fun during the school holidays.

The Mayor of Caerphilly County Borough Council, Cllr Gaynor Oliver, was on hand to present the prizes to the children, who were recognised for their love of reading. The overall winner, Harry Chapman, aged 6, won Argos vouchers worth £100 and a goody bag.

Cllr Rhianon Passmore, cabinet member for education and lifelong learning, said: “Congratulations to all the children who won prizes. Reading for fun at a young age encourages children to be inquisitive and imaginative as they grow up, and will allow them to excel throughout their education. The Summer Reading Challenge has proved popular this year, and we hope that each year it grows so that more children recognise the fun in reading.”
