Plaid AM tables Assembly motion to defend Gwent Police budget

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Monday May 23rd, 2011.

Plaid Cymru Assembly Member for South Wales East, Jocelyn Davies has tabled a Statement of Opinion at the National Assembly calling on the UK Government to ditch plans to cut the local policing budget by 20%

Gwent Police Federation, the organisation which represents rank and file officers, warned last week that crime would rise if the proposed cuts went ahead.

A survey of officers conducted by the Federation revealed that 89% said such cuts would have a detrimental effect on crime levels; 91% said they thought there would be a decline in the service they give.

Plaid Cymru’s Jocelyn Davies AM said: “These are the worst possible cuts at the worst possible time.

“It is well known that at times of economic difficulty crime goes up. Our communities are suffering as a result of the economic downturn and it is unfair to expect them to suffer further by slashing the capability of the police to deal with crime.

“I want to pay tribute to Gwent Police Federation for highlighting the potential extent of these cuts and hope the UK Government will sit up and take action.

“I have tabled a Statement of Opinion at the National Assembly demanding the UK Government abandon their plans to slash our local policing budget by 20 per cent and I hope my colleagues, particularly here in Gwent, will support my motion. We all need to make clear our opposition to these devastating plans.”

Jocelyn Davies AM is absolutely correct in her position on this issue.

It will be interesting to see if all her local colleagues sitting in the Assembly support her and dipense with partisan politics.

She will certainly have the support of all the citizens of gwent. I wonder if this motion/statement has the support of our MPs? Labour are, so far, a failure in opposition in London, they fail to properly scrutinise the simplest of issues which adversly effect Welsh Citizens, We therefore need representative like Plaid Cymru`s Jocelyn Davies to that for us. I see no reason why her motion should note sail through the Assembly???????

@geriant: then devolve it! The single thing Labour can do to "stand up against the condems" and it's not even on their radar.
