A woman had to be rescued this morning after her car broke through a fence and plunged 15ft down a banking into a river.

Gwent Police said it received a call at 6.15am reporting a vehicle had careered off Commercial Road, Machen, and into the river.

The car, a Vauxhall Zafira, was discovered upside down in the river and the woman was freed from the car by firefighters from Duffryn. She was taken to hospital suffering from a hand injury and mild hypothermia. Her injuries are not thought to be serious.

In a separate collision in the same area, a Subaru Impreza collided with a wall. The woman driver was taken to hospital with back and neck injuries which are not thought to be serious. Commercial Road was closed for a short time but has since been re-opened.

Anyone who witnessed either collision is asked to contact Gwent Police on 101.
