Islwyn MP joins calls for urgent meeting with PM on steel redundancies

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:14, Monday December 3rd, 2012.

Islwyn MP Chris Evans has joined calls for an urgent meeting with the Prime Minister to discuss local job losses after steel giant Tata announced plans to cut jobs.

Last month the company confirmed its sites in Crosskeys and Tredegar will close, the company has announced, with job losses numbering 87 and 76 respectively.

Following the news, Mr Evans has added his voice to calls from the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Steel to meet with David Cameron to discuss the redundancies.

Mr Evans said: “The news that Tata steel are set to close operations in Crosskeys is a real blow to the town and devastating news for the 87 workers and their families.

“It is worth remembering that behind each redundancy statistic is a family who will now face an uphill struggle to pay the bills.

“That is why an urgent meeting is needed with the Prime Minister to find a way forward for the hundreds of workers across Wales who have lost their jobs.”
