Street Market trial for Bargoed

A weekly street market could soon be coming to Bargoed town centre.

Caerphilly County Borough Council is offering a licence to a market operator for a six month trial period after a group of the town’s retailers approached the council with the idea in February last year.

St Gwladys car park on Lower High Street will host the market while M&B Markets, a market operator from West Wales, who already run markets in neighbouring towns, has expressed an interest in running it.

Cllr Ken James, cabinet member for regeneration, planning and sustainable development, said: “Regenerating towns such as Bargoed is one of our key priorities. Along with a major retail development it is important to look at features from the past that have a positive effect on visitor numbers to Bargoed. A weekly market is an important part of the shopping offer, helping to boost local trade.”

The council has said the market will be reviewed after the trial period and if the decision to continue is made, the licence will be put out to tender.

The trial market is due to begin on March 7, 2013.

Fantastic, simple, and cost effective idea, by the Labour Council, to rejuvenate trade in this former once` bustling` shopping town.

The former Plaid Cymru Council refused to even consider such a move for the attraction of shoppers to the Caerphilly `top of town` area when they were running the Council, The reason for refusing?? because the proposals was made by the Traders representatives, who just happened to be, and still are, Independent Councillors in the Town, and to agree with it would show the Plaid Cymru Ward Councillors up for their dilitory approach to any suggestions they did`nt think of first, and there are not many of them.

Plaid Cymru played politics with the interests of Residents and Traders of Caerphilly for to long, it is now time for the Labour Council to give further consideration to these proposals as they are doing in Bargoed, the creation of street markets in the shopping centres of the Valley is a no brainer, of course it will work!!!!

bargoed might have needed investment but they have had 90 million spent on them and from blackwood to risca our facilities are zero.

Ken James needs to start looking at abercarn and cwmcarn, he is supposed to represent cwmcarn in caerphilly.
