A new 10km road running race has been announced for Caerphilly.
Caerphilly Castle will provide the backdrop for the town’s first 10km race, which is being organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council.
The race will be held on Sunday June 23, 2013.
The 6.2 mile course will lead runners in and around the town centre, with the start and finishing line located in the shadow of the town’s medieval castle.
Cllr Dave Poole, the council’s cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “This exciting new event will offer runners of all abilities an opportunity to get involved. It will be a well organised run through our historic town and we hope to attract over 1,000 people for our inaugural race.
“Last summer we saw the Olympic Torch and the Tour of Britain visit Caerphilly, so we want to build on this sporting legacy and get more people fit and active. What better way to do this than to set a goal and train over the next few months ready for this new event.”
As well as the main race, there will also be a 3k junior course for under 16s.
This proposal has been developed by the council and is supported by Welsh Athletics, Sport Wales and Welsh Government.
More details about the route and entry process will be announced by the council in the near future.
At first glance this seems like great news for the town. I understand that its early days in the project and the details are still being worked out but I hope this can be an opportunity for participants to raise money for charity and to enjoy the day. Caerphilly deserves events like this and I hope this is recieved well by the public.
For someone who runs in Caerphiily I think that this is fantastic for both the town and runners in and around Caerphilly.
Hopefully this event may go some way to create a running club in Caerphilly.
What idiot decided on this date?
It clashes with the two Race for Life events in Cardiff which a great number of women take part in, both to raise money for a very special and worthwhile cause and personal reasons.
Do your research first!
Excellent news and nice to see that with all the health and safety red tape that road races can still be organised..! Will hopefully attend and try and get some Run4All running club from Neath and Port Talbot Harriers along!
fantastic news for the town [and long overdue].I have been advised that the proposed date will now be changed to avoid clashing with the race for life.I echo the comment above regarding a running club for caerphilly, most other towns have one,why not us?Looking forward to getting further details, also why not donate some of the funds towards the commemorative garden for the senghennydd mining disaster
I have a ladies running group which is unofficial but if any ladies want to come and have a social run I am happy to have you. The more the merrier and it doesn't matter if you have never run before. It's on a Wednesday at 6:30 outside the library
(don't get mixed up with the outdoor fitness group who also meet there)
