Islwyn MP Chris Evans has thrown his weight behind Dementia Awareness Week which begins on the July 3.
To show his support, he recently visited the Alzheimer’s Society in Pontllanfraith. Mr Evans met up with carers and sufferers to learn more about their experience of the disease at a coffee and craft morning.
After presenting a cheque of £75 as a donation from a polling company, Mr Evans said: “I was delighted for the opportunity to show my support for a charity which does such important work for sufferers of this disease. These coffee and craft mornings provide a great environment for carers and sufferers to meet and socialise.
“It is worth remembering that one in three people over the age of 65 will die with dementia and it is important that there are events like these to prevent sufferers feeling isolated.
“Dementia Awareness Week will hopefully help educate the public about this increasingly common disease and I am proud to give it my wholehearted support.”
The Alzheimer’s Society hopes to raise £350,000 over the May bank holiday weekend and will be collecting money outside Tesco stores across South Wales.
