Ban chip shops and fast food from being built near school says Wales’ top doctor

Wales’ chief medical officer has said banning chip shops and fast food places from being built near schools could make a difference in tackling childhood obesity.

Dr Ruth Hussey also said not allowing pupils to leave school for lunchtimes would also have an impact, provided schools had healthy menu options.

According to figures from the latest Welsh Health Survey, 35% of all children are overweight or obese, of which 19% are obese.

Dr Hussey said: ‘Obesity in childhood can lead to a lifetime of serious health problems, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes and high blood pressure. Refusing applications for more fast food outlets in the vicinity of schools would support children to make healthier food choices.’

The Welsh Government is currently consulting on new public health laws.

The consultation to collect views about whether a Public Health Bill is needed in Wales closes on February 20.

I have been led to believe that plaid cymru voted time and time again to stop mcdonalds going to newbridge which is inundated with fast food outlets.

Yet as soon as labour had the majority in caerphilly cbc they passed it straight away despite being right by newbridge comprehensive school and a very busy roundabout. Children are now crossing the roundabout and walking on the roads. It is very dangerous indeed.

If this isn't true then perhaps we can have clarification on this matter.
