A police sergeant from Blackwood is getting on her bike next month to cycle 550km across Kenya and Tanzania in memory of her late mother.

Sgt Angela Burt, 47, is taking on the challenge to raise cash for Macmillan Cancer Support and will dedicate her ride to her mother Patsy Marten, who died from breast cancer in 1990 aged 47.

She said: “It is a 551 km ride over varying terrain from tar road to rough dirt road taking in some mountains and valleys.

“We will be riding in February which is the hottest time of year, but it is not meant to be easy.

“When things get tough and I am tired and want to stop, I will think of cancer victims and remember that they cant just stop because they are tired.

“Most of all I will remember my Mum and how she laughed in the face of adversity, never letting anything stop her from being the amazing courageous person she was.”

It will not be the first time that Sgt Burt has worked with Macmillan raising much-needed funds.

Over the past 20 years she has raised around £8,000 for the charity taking on numerous challenges such as cycling 500km across Mexico and cycling the 1,700km from John O’Groats to Lands End.
