A bowls enthusiast from Caerphilly has made his teammates green with envy after banking a staggering £1,135,578 Lotto Jackpot.

Alun Jones, 27, a regular bowler at Llanbradach Bowling Club, won the jackpot prize on Wednesday January 16 with a Lucky Dip ticket he bought online.

Alun, who lives in in Caerphilly with his parents, dad Raymond, 59, and mum Portland, 51, plans to use some of his jackpot to buy a new kitchen for his mum.

After discovering he had won the life-changing sum, Alun decided to leave his job as a health and safety administrator at a local firm in Nantgarw to have some time to think about his future.

He said: “I couldn’t believe it when I checked my emails on the Friday after being stuck in with all the snow. It certainly cheered me up when I saw the winning amount appear on the screen.

“When I told my parents I’d won my mum burst into tears, but my dad took a little more convincing as he knows I’m a bit of a joker.”

Apart from treating his parents, Alun is also looking to buy a car so he doesn’t have to borrow his mum’s Peugeot 206 to get around.

“The money will mean I can get a bit more independence including a new car, I’ve always quite fancied a Mercedes. I’m also hoping I can start to look for a new house without worrying about struggling to pay a mortgage.”

Sports-fanatic Alun – a Bolton Wanderers supporter – celebrated his win with his friends and bowls team at the Llanbradach Bowling Club, where he has been playing in the league every Saturday for the past year.

Alun is also a big rugby fan and is looking forward to the hotly anticipated start of the Six Nations this weekend when Wales take on Ireland at the Millennium Stadium. He hopes to spend some of his winnings following the British Lions to Australia in July on their 2013 tour.
