Christmas shoplifting in Blackwood fell by 11.8% compared to December 2011, according to Gwent Police.
In total, 15 shoplifters were dealt with and stolen goods were returned to the stores following searches of their homes, not only in Gwent, but also in other force areas.
Police have attributed the low number to partnership working with Caerphilly County Borough Council, shop workers, the Businesses Against Crime Partnership and the Blackwood Retail Partnership.
Blackwood Neighbourhood Policing Team Inspector, Mark Smith said: “For the second consecutive year, Blackwood town centre has seen a reduction in shoplifting offences which is as a result of our effective partnership working. Now that Christmas is over, we do not forget about this crime type and with our partners, we remain focused to tackling this issue.
“Targeted patrols will continue and we will work closely with the town centre retailers to prevent and detect offences. Antisocial behaviour is currently down 40% within the Blackwood ward. I strongly believe this is a direct result of our on-going work both during the day and evening, especially each Thursday when policing the High Street road closure and vehicle related matters associated with the cruiser issue.
“There will also be an effective and highly visible police presence in the area on each Six Nations match day. Blackwood town centre visitors should feel re-assured by our on-going work both in the day and evening, so that their visit to the area is a pleasant one.”
Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services said: “It is very pleasing to note that such positive progress was made throughout the December campaign in tackling this crime, and through a continued focussed partnership effort I am confident we will go on seeing improvements.
“Operations such as this one illustrate the real benefits of partnership working in order to achieve outcomes for the good of the community.”
