Young ecologists at Pentwynmawr lead the way on the environment

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 17:00, Wednesday February 6th, 2013.

Young ecologists at Pentwynmawr Primary School are leading the way on the environment after raising awareness of the importance of litter picking during a special school assembly for Islwyn MP Chris Evans and local councillor Gary Johnston.

The Pentwynmawr pupils, who have set up their very own eco-committee, have been working hard to encourage family, neighbours and friends to put litter in the bin to protect the environment for future generations and have recently earned their second eco school green flag award.

After the assembly, the pupils took Mr Evans and Cllr Johnston on a tour of their new greenhouse made entirely from recycled bottles.

Mr Evans, who is a member of Labour’s environment team, said: “I was delighted to be invited along to Pentwynmawr and hear about all the good work they are doing to protect their environment. The passion and knowledge they have for environmental issues is fantastic, they really are an example to us all.”

Cllr Johnston added: “As a Governor at the school I was very proud the pupil’s achievements were rewarded with a second green flag. When helping the children with their new greenhouse, you could really see the passion which they had for recycling. I would like to congratulate Mrs Nash and all the Staff who lead by a great example.”
