Tesco reaffirms plans to open in Penyrheol

Supermarket giant Tesco has reaffirmed plans to open a store in Penyrheol following local rumours that the company had pulled out.

The company has again confirmed plans that it will open its fifth store in the Caerphilly town area on the site of the former Bowls Inn in Penyrheol.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We are committed to opening a small shop in Penyrheol. The planning process takes time but we are working hard behind the scenes to finalise the details. I would like to thank residents for their patience and look forward to confirming the opening date, as well as kick-starting the recruitment process, in the coming months.”

The new store, which was granted initial planning permission in December 2011, will create 20 new jobs that will be prioritised for Aber Valley and Penyrheol residents.

Tesco has previously said that further planning applications would be needed for signs and a cash machine. The store will not be open 24-hours a day and will be open from either 6am to 10pm or 7am to 11pm.

South Wales East AM and Penyrheol councillor Lindsay Whittle has previously spoken of his opposition to the new Tesco.

Good the more job opportunities the better! People need employment.

I would like to know how many of these jobs are part time. These supermarkets always announce new employment opportunities as if one job is the same as another.

I have nothing against Tesco but is it really desirable to have five Tescos, of various sizes, between Trethomas and Penyrheol?

Just wait for the traffic jams. There is much less space than for the old Bowls. As it is, people park all over the pavement at Penyrheol for the shops there. The council had better ensure that the gate to the park car park is locked closed.
