Gwent Police and Caerphilly County Borough Council have reminded rugby fans to act and drink responsibly during the rest of this year’s Six Nations tournament.
Officers have been contacting pubs in the area to remind them of their role in serving alcohol responsibly. Licensees are also being encouraged to check their CCTV systems are working.
During the tournament, police and Trading Standards have been visiting licensed premises to check that all door staff are SIA (Security Industry Authority) approved.
Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Community Safety Wardens and police officers have also increased their presence in town centres.
Caerphilly Partnership Inspector Andy Down said: “The Six Nation’s is a tournament that is widely celebrated and one which we want people to enjoy. What we want to remind people is to act responsibly when they are out in local pubs and clubs.
“Rugby weekends include long days of drinking and hopefully celebrating, please think about your behaviour and the consequences of drinking too much on a Saturday day and night.
“We will continue to have a visible presence of police officers across Caerphilly to act as a deterrent and to reduce levels of alcohol-related disorder and violence, while simultaneously dealing firmly with those who break the law.”
Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services said: “We would encourage people who are out enjoying the Six Nations festivities to work with us and our partners to ensure that everyone remains safe. With a traditional increase in alcohol consumption, tempers can occasionally flare, but by acting sensibly residents will be helping us to ensure that everyone has a trouble-free, safe and enjoyable time.”
