South Wales East AM Lindsay Whittle’s blog: February 20

News, Opinion | Richard Gurner | Published: 13:00, Wednesday February 20th, 2013.

Trinity Fields
School inspectors have given top marks following an inspection report on Trinity Fields, the only special school serving Caerphilly County Borough.

Forty per cent of the pupils suffer from severe learning difficulties but despite the challenges the Ystrad Mynach school and resource centre delivers for its pupils.

Estyn Inspectors rated its performance as good with good standards across the school as is provision for pupils’ health and well-being and staff are praised for the way they manage behaviour and develop communication skills.
It was great to read that the staff are highly motivated and feel valued by the new management team and there is a very clear mission for the school.

Pupils also feel safe and happy in school and inspectors found they were positive towards learning.

And it’s not just the inspectors that rate Trinity Fields. Fifteen parents responded to a questionnaire and the vast majority said they were satisfied with the school, that their children like it and were helped to settle in.
Well done to parents, pupils and the staff at Trinity Fields.

Fundraiser
I was touched to receive an email from Kayleigh Nash, who lives at Heol Graig Wen in Penyrheol.

Her remarkable daughter Darcie, who is just one, has faced some enormous health challenges over the past year and I have huge sympathy for her and her family. I wish them well.

In an email Kayleigh told me: “We are so proud of our little girl to what she has had to overcome to be here and on March 31 (Easter Sunday) we are doing a fundraising event in Caerphilly Penyrheol Labour Club to raise and donate money to the Caerphilly Children’s Centre which Darcie has been attending and will be attending for many years to come.”

Kayleigh explained that the plans have still to be finalised but the activities will include an auction, a raffle, bands, stalls and a football match. Organisers also hope to be able to put on a bouncy castle, face painting and other surprises.

I hope people both locally and further afield will come along to support this worthwhile fundraiser which starts at noon and runs into the evening.

This was a great outcome for all of the staff, students (and their families) at Trinity Fields. As a member of the Governing Body, I have seen at first hand the hard work put in by the new Principal, Mr Ian Elliott and his dedicated team of teachers and support staff. The forecasts for Trinity Fields are excellent and the School will continue to provide a quality learning environment for all of it's students. Well done indeed!
