A Pengam woman has admitted stealing gold worth £3,600 from the Blackwood branch of Cash Generator.

Rhian Blackwell, 40, of Commercial Street, Pengam, stole the gold between October 2012 and January 2013 while she was working as its deputy manager.

She was ordered by Caerphilly Magistrates’ Court on February 18 to pay £1,000 compensation to Cash Generator and a £60 victim surcharge.

The court was told how Blackwell was supposed to have placed the gold in a safe, but instead stole the precious metal. It was also told how the single-mother had over £10,000 of debt and was behind with her mortgage.

Bosses became suspicious and studied CCTV footage which showed Blackwell opening and closing the safe but putting nothing in it.

Blackwell also has to comply with an 18-month community order.

To pay the compensation and the victim surcharge, Blackwell will have her benefits deducted.
