Almost 600 school pupils from across Caerphilly County Borough joined together on Friday to celebrate St David’s Day at a series of special lunchtime concerts.

Pupils from 19 schools across the county borough entertained crowds totalling over 3,000 at lunchtime concerts held in Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly and Risca town centres on Friday 1st March to celebrate the day of Wales’ patron saint.

Musical delights including singing, folk dancing, street theatre, recitals and brass and orchestral ensembles were the order of the day, and school children were also joined by local community group Stagecoach Theatre Arts at each venue, who also entertained the crowds by showcasing their talents.

Cllr Harry Andrews, leader of the council, said: “I was delighted to see so many people turn out for this series of lunchtime concerts. The children sang and performed wonderfully, and helped make us feel so proud to be Welsh on such a special day.”

Each concert also ended with a rousing rendition of the Welsh National Anthem.

And I understand the Caerphilly event in the Twyn Car Park was a superb performance all round.

And it is gratifying to see a number of senior Caerphilly Councillors in attendance supporting local school children.

More should be done by both County and Community Council`s to celebrate and highlight St Davids Day each year. I understand that some local Councillors have a number of new ideas for doing so, lets hope their plans are supported by all their elected colleagues.
