Gilfach Fargoed Primary School pupils have become radio stars after winning a county borough wide poetry competition saying why they love their school meals.
School children from across Caerphilly County Borough were invited to take part in the competition, with the prize for the winning school of a tour of the Real Radio studios and to be featured in an advert which is currently being broadcast all over South Wales.
Competition winner Aaron Thomas, a pupil in Year 4 at Gilfach Fargoed Primary School, along with nine of his classmates got the chance to visit Real Radio to record an advert to promote the Appetite for Life Campaign. The campaign aims to get children to eat a more nutritious diet during the school day.
Caerphilly County Borough Council is the first local authority in Wales to be fully compliant with the Appetite for Life guidelines in primary and secondary schools.
Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure, said: “Caerphilly is the first authority in Wales to be fully compliant in the adoption of The Appetite for Life standards. It has changed the way we deliver school meals across our county borough for the better, improving the food and drinks provided in our schools.”
The judges were so impressed with the standard of entries that three runners-up were also chosen – Daffydd Rose, Ryan Fortune, Cai Pratten also from the same school.
With all the excitement of becoming Real Radio stars, some of the pupils admitted they couldn’t sleep the night before they recorded their radio advert. The pupils recorded their advert next to the studio where Real Radio DJs were live on-air followed by a tour of the studios.
