Coleg Gwent students have their say at government conference

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Thursday March 14th, 2013.

Coleg Gwent students got the chance to put their own questions to the First Minister of Wales at the Welsh Government’s annual government and politics conference in Cardiff recently.

Politics students from Coleg Gwent’s Crosskeys Campus joined other young people from across Wales for the two-day event, which educates students on the work of the Assembly and provide an opportunity for them to air their views on issues which are important to them.

Students got a taste of political life by taking part in a ‘Question Time’ style event with former First Minister Rhodri Morgan and current First Minister Carwyn Jones, and even produced their own party manifesto.

The group also learnt how to amend legislation and submit a petition to the Petition Committee and won praise for their good petition ideas.

Coleg Gwent politics lecturer Rob Southall said: “As voters and potential politicians of the future, fantastic events like this enable our students to really understand how Wales is governed on a practical level, and also helps them to make their own voices heard.”
