Train cleaners to strike for Six Nations finale

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:00, Friday March 15th, 2013.

Cleaners working for Arriva Trains Wales will strike tomorrow on the day thousands of fans are expected to descend on Cardiff for Wales’ Six Nations decider against England.

Members of the Rail Maritime and Transport (RMT) union, employed by contractors Churchill, will stage the 24-hour walkout over low pay.

RMT General Secretary Bob Crow said: “This battle on Arriva Trains Wales is now seen as having national significance in the campaign against low pay and exploitation by greedy companies and RMT will continue to ratchet up the pressure for fairness for this important group of Welsh transport staff as part of our national cleaners’ campaign. ATW, as the host operator, will not be allowed to wash their hands of this exploitation on their watch either.

“In the face of the insulting zero pay offers from the company our members have had no option but to fight back in the battle to eliminate poverty pay and that is why they will be striking next Saturday.”

Arriva Trains recently advertised for a ` night` cleaner at the Grangetown Cardiff Depot, cleaning carriages. Hours: 35 per 4 day week, Wages £26,200, in addition the successful candidate would get free travel passes for arriva trains. Now that sound a `fair` enough deal to me?.

This story in the Observer of course refers to wages paid by a ` sub-contracting cleaning company`, presumably, after they have creamed their share off the sort of wages paid by arrive to directly employed staff?.
