Work is due to begin later this month on a £280,000 refurbishment of Risca Leisure Centre.

The facelift includes a refurbished and extended first floor fitness suite complete with an improved wide selection of the latest resistance and functional training equipment. The expanded gym area will assume the space currently occupied by the bar and café at the Leisure Centre.

A brand new health suite accessible from poolside is also to be unveiled, including a sauna and steam room, whilst a new multi purpose ‘social area’ will add value for service users.

The revamp will see the installation of a new pool viewing gallery alongside the multi purpose ‘social area’, which itself will overlook two floodlit 3G astro-turf pitches.

Cllr David Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “These exciting developments and investments by the council will improve facilities to a standard that will ensure users can enjoy Risca Leisure Centre for years to come. Upon completion, the centre will offer a great opportunity for young and old to get fit and healthy in a modern and welcoming environment.”

The refurbishment work is due to start over the Easter holidays with completion estimated by the end of June, with plans of a big launch event on completion.

Risca Leisure Centre Manager, Matthew Taylor said: “There is a great deal of excitement surrounding the refurbishment and the benefits it will provide to the users of this popular leisure centre. I’d like to thank members of the public for their patience during this period and I can assure them it will be worth the wait.”

The café/bar area, which previously served as a pool-viewing gallery, has now closed permanently. Parents of swimmers are able to view swim lessons poolside as a temporary measure.
