Revellers packed out Caerphilly Rugby Club on Sunday night at the official launch of Megaday 2011.

Music lovers were treated to the sound of local bands One Track Mind, Best Served Chilled, Tab 80 and Melt City as they were given a taste of what’s to come at this year’s music festival.

Now in its 17th year, the annual two-day music festival is being held August Bank Holiday weekend on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28. Over the years it has raised more than £200,000 for Velindre Hospital.

Megaday is held each year at Caerphilly Rugby Club’s Virginia Park ground in memory of local musicians Andrew Nichols, who was known as Mega, and Paul Grahame, who both lost their lives to cancer.

Until his death in 2001, Paul had played at every Megaday with his band PG and the Tips and had also played a major role in organising the festival.

Megaday founder Steve Sullivan, also known as Suggs, said this year’s event will see a reunion of PG’s former bandmates to mark the tenth anniversary of his death.

He said: “The big thing this year is the tenth anniversary and to end, we’ll be playing a song that PG recorded before he died along with some fireworks.”

James Edwards, who is a co-organiser of Megaday, added: “It’s going to be packed weekend this year. We’ll have live bands, DJs, and entertainment for the kids.”

Jonathan Williams, guitarist with Best Served Chilled, said: “Everyone lives in fear of cancer and the more money that goes to researching treatment the better. We’re thrilled that we played tonight’s launch and can’t wait for the main event in August.”
