Ystrad Mynach College student Jordan Clarke has just proved himself as one of the brightest young sparks in Welsh electronics by claiming silver in a prestigious all-Wales skills contest.
The 18-year-old aspiring engineer battled it out against ten other students from across Wales to come second in the Skills Competition Wales for industrial electronics.
Backed by the Welsh Government and the European Social Fund, the annual Skills Competition Wales events are designed to showcase excellence in vocational learning and promote the importance of developing a highly skilled workforce.
Jordan’s success in the electronics final came during a visit to Gower College Swansea’s Ty Coch campus, where he became the only entrant not from the host college to win a prize. Other finalists included Angelo Amoruso, 18, and Daniel Thomas, 17, who were both representing Gower College Swansea, and took Gold and Bronze place respectively.
Jordan said he was proud to represent Ystrad Mynach College at the event and added: “I can’t believe I won a trophy compared to everyone else who competed.”
Competition entrants completed three tasks focusing on the practicalities of designing, assembling and maintaining an electronic circuit, as well as electronics theory.
The EU-backed Skills Competition Wales aims to find Wales’ most talented trainees across a wide range of skills, including fields such as patisserie, automotive engineering, aerospace, construction skills, catering, accountancy, media, and information technology.
