Shared Lives scheme celebrates anniversary

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 15:00, Thursday April 4th, 2013.

A council scheme which supports vulnerable adults across six local authorities in South East Wales is celebrating its first anniversary.

Shared Lives works across Blaenau Gwent, Torfaen, Newport, Monmoutshire, Merthyr and lead partner Caerphilly County Borough, providing long term, respite, emergency and sessional support.

Carers and users of the scheme have been invited to an event marking the first anniversary with their achievements being recognised with presentations of certificates and flowers.

People supported by the scheme include those diagnosed with a learning disability, older people, people with a physical disability, people with mental health issues and people with dementia.

Cllr Robin Woodyatt, cabinet member for social services, said: “Currently this scheme is supporting 181 service users and 180 carers, making a real difference to their lives.

“Each of the vulnerable adults accessing the scheme are benefiting from bespoke services that suit each of their individual and particular needs, with the scheme bridging the gap between the person and the services they require. Hopefully we can build on the success of this first year and continue to provide outstanding services to the people of the South East Wales who truly need them.”
