MMR vaccination clinics will be held on Saturday April 20 2013 between 10am and 4pm in Abergavenny, Newport and Ystrad Mynach.

The clincs are being held in response to the recent measles outbreak in Swansea. The number of confirmed cases in the Swansea area is now 765. On Tuesday, Health Minister Mark Drakeford said the number of measles cases will continue to rise over the coming weeks.

Clinics at Newport’s Royal Gwent and Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in Ystrad Mynach are for people between the ages of one and 25 years of age.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board has said it is keen to vaccinate people in the 16 to 25 age group and that it is crucial they are vaccinated before exams.

Last weekend, 563 people were immunised at an MMR clinic held at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr.

Aneurin Bevan Health Board has said that 34 cases of measles have been reported in its area between January and April.

Public Health Wales figures have revealed that 9,000 children aged five to 18 are not fully protected against measles in the Aneurin Bevan Health Board area.

People who have had two doses of the MMR will be 99% protected against the disease.

An extremely contagious virus, measles can lead to serious complications and in rare cases can be fatal.

Typical symptoms of measles include fever, cough, conjunctivitis and a rash.

Complications are quite common even in healthy people, and about 20% of reported measles cases experience one or more complications.

GPs will be continuing to vaccinate regularly and if you already have an appointment with your GP please keep this and do not attend these additional clinics, extra clinics will be also held in other areas in Gwent over the coming weeks.

Please do not attend if you have felt recently unwell with a temperature or other flu like symptoms.

Remember, GPs are also vaccinating throughout the week, so contact your surgery for details of those sessions.
