A campaign has been launched to boost the number of emergency heart defibrillators in the Caerphilly area.
Called Tommy’s Ticker, the campaign is being run by the local Tommy Cooper Society – originally set-up to help raise funds for a statue of the Caerphilly-born magician.
It is now continuing to raise funds in memory of the fez-wearing comedian.
Tudor Jones, from the society, said: “On April 15 1984 the great, Caerphilly-born comedian, Tommy Cooper collapsed on stage during the London Weekend Television show ‘Live from Her Majesesty’s’.
“Despite the efforts of Jimmy Tarbuck’s manager who was a qualified St Johns Ambulance paramedic and other first aiders, he was pronounced dead on arrival at accident and emergency. Things might have been different if a defibrillator (AED) had been available in the theatre.
“This thought has motivated the Tommy Cooper Society to launch the ‘Tommy’s Ticker Fund’ with the aim of providing defibrillators and training in their use.
“Initially they will be located in Caerphilly. Despite the area’s high incidence of heart related problems, few defibrillators are available. However it is hoped in time coverage will be extended throughout Caerphilly County.
“The Tommy Cooper Society is receiving guidance from The British Heart Foundation and St. John’s Ambulance for which it is very grateful. A defibrillator costs in the region of £1000.”
The campaign has received the backing of Caerphilly AM Jeff Cuthbert.
Mr Cuthbert said: “I’m delighted to support the Tommy’s Ticker Fund campaign, which the Tommy Cooper Society has launched with the support of the British Heart Foundation and St John’s Ambulance Cymru.
“Defibrillators are remarkable and potentially life-saving machines and raising enough money to have them installed locally would be a fitting tribute to Caerphilly’s most famous son.”
If you would like to make a donation to the fund please send a cheque payable to ‘The Tommy Cooper Society’ to: Mr Tudor Jones, 12, Warren Drive, Caerphilly, CF83 1HQ.
