University of Glamorgan to charge £9,000 tuition fees

The University of Glamorgan is to charge up £9,000 in tuition fees.

From September 2012 the university’s fees will start from £7,500 for a full-time foundation degree, with £9,000 for a full-time undergraduate honours degree.

Julie Lydon, Vice Chancellor of the University and Chief Executive of the University of Glamorgan Group, said: “We have considered carefully and consulted widely on this proposed package of graduate contribution and support.

“It was not an easy decision to reach but we reluctantly concluded it was necessary to protect the quality of student experience in the context of rapid and significant reductions in government funding.

“It is now for Higher Education Funding Council for Wales to take a responsible decision to ensure the stable future of two institutions of regional significance and strategic importance for higher education in Wales. In a competitive market, the Glamorgan proposal reflects the package needed to continue our mission of enhancing the student experience, enabling our students to reach their potential, and equipping them with the employability they need. Without it our students will suffer from a diminution of teaching resources, academic and pastoral support.”

Glamorgan joins Aberystwyth, Cardiff, Bangor and Newport universities in charging the maximum of £9,000 in tuition fees.

Welsh students attending these will be charged £3,400 with the Welsh Government paying the difference.
