Pupils from St Martin’s School in Caerphilly town recently took part in an event aimed at boosting interest in science and engineering.

The event, at the University of South Wales, was attended by more than 60 pupils from across South Wales and was designed to encourage girls to follow a career in science, technology engineering and maths.

Leanne Page, a teacher at St Martin’s, said: “We really encourage our pupils to attend sessions like this one today. Science and technology is sometimes overlooked by female students as a career choice, and this awareness day shows them how they might be able to develop their interests in these areas.

Thirteen year old Chloe Curran was one of the pupils who enjoyed the opportunity.

She said: “It is great to come onto the university campus and discover more about science and technology as well as getting experience of being at a university.”

The session was organised by the Engineering Education Scheme Wales’ ‘Girls into Engineering’ project.
The project aims to inspire and motivate young people to choose a career in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
