Air cadets from Ystrad Mynach’s 2353 Squadron recently visited an aircraft engine maintenance base to learn about career opportunities.

Sixteen cadets took part in the visit to GE Aviation Wales, based in Nantgarw. While there the cadets learnt about the maintenance, repair and overhaul of an aircraft engine and the different career options available in the aviation sector.

The tour was run as part of the company’s education programme to encourage more youngsters to consider a career in science and engineering.

Flt Lt Andrew Wigley, from the 2353 Squadron, said: “The opportunity to tour the facility and learn about the different types of engines overhauled at GE Aviation Wales has inspired several to apply for the work experience opportunities available and consider a career path they did not previously have in mind.”

Occupying over 1.2 million square feet, the site has two state-of-the-art engine test facilities and employs a highly-skilled workforce of over 1,200 people, providing customer support for a range of global companies including Emirates, Continental, easyJet and British Airways.

Rhys Williams, from GE Aviation Wales, said: “We are delighted that the air cadets of the 2353 squadron were able to come on site for a visit to learn more about what we do here at the facility.”
