Tax credit claimants reminded to renew

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 09:00, Tuesday July 23rd, 2013.

Caerphilly County Borough’s 16,000 tax credit claimants are being reminded by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) that they must renew claims by July 31, or their payments might stop.

HMRC has sent tax credit renewal packs to about 247,600 tax credit claimants in Wales.

Claimants must tell HMRC about any changes to their circumstances that they haven’t already reported, such as changes to working hours, childcare costs or pay. If asked, they must also provide details of the previous year’s income.

The amount a claimant’s income can change before HMRC must be told – the income disregard – was reduced this April to £5,000.

Nick Lodge, Director General of Benefits and Credits, said: “We are asking claimants to renew immediately. The sooner they do, the sooner we can check their payments and avoid paying too little, or too much money, which they then have to pay back.”

Claimants can renew by calling the Tax Credits helpline – 0345 300 3900, or post their renewal to the address in the pack that was sent to them.
