Man charged over Blackwood Poundstretcher arson

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 11:27, Monday July 29th, 2013.

A man has been arrested and charged with arson by police investigating the Blackwood Poundstretcher blaze.

The early morning fire on May 1 this year, which took place on Wednesday last week, caused so much damage to Blackwood High Street’s Poundstretcher store that the building had to be torn down.

The 2am fire is thought to have begun in rubbish bins outside the shop.

At its height, around 50 firefighters tackled the blaze which took six hours to bring under control. No-one was injured.

Poundstretcher has promised to return to the town.

Stephen John Powell, 27, has been charged with arson and is due to appear before Caerphilly Magistrates’ court on Monday July 29.

I know the name of the man who has done this and so do many other people.

He seems to be well known around the Blackwood area.
