Members of Rhymney-based Gwerin Day Service recently took part in a sponsored walk and raised £400 for the Sophie Pearson Fund.

The cheque was presented to the charity trustees at an event on Monday September 16 at Rhymney Day Centre.

Sophie, the daughter of Gerwyn Pearson and Alyson Hughes, died in November 2006 at the age of 12. She had been diagnosed earlier that year with dilated cardiomyopathy, an inflammation of the heart muscles. Sophie had been a pupil at Rhymney Comprehensive School and prior to that White Rose Primary School and was well-known in the local community.

The fund set up in her name has been used to provide specialist equipment to children suffering from heart problems, to help improve hospital diagnostic services and to support local families who have children suffering from coronary illness.

Nick Lewis, of Gwerin Day Service, said: “We are very happy to walk for Sophie, we think the work that the charity does is just brilliant.”

Anyone wishing to make donations to The Sophie Pearson Fund can contact Mr Gerwyn Pearson on 07983 960 999. All donations gratefully received.
