Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall held its first annual talent show recently.
Various acts including musicians, bands, singers and dancers auditioned in front of two local judges over the course of a weekend and nine finalists were chosen.
On Friday October 4, the finalists performed in the hope of winning the most votes from the audience and a first prize of £100.
The winner was Beth Bryant, a singer/songwriter who performed one of her own songs in the final. Second and third prize winners, Rosie May Newman, a young singer and guitarist, and Mary Osborne, a singer, were presented with £50 each.
The youngest finalist was seven-year-old dancer Liwsi Kilcourse who charmed the audience with her routines to Will.i.am and Justin Beiber hits.
Caerphilly Workmen’s Hall was opened in 1925 and was at the heart of the community for many years. The committee hope that more events like the Talent Show will bring the venue back to the community that built it.
In recent weeks, the committee have secured an interest-free loan to make essential repairs to the roof of the hall.
Kathy Lye, Chair of the committee, said: “We are relieved and grateful to the Coal Industry Social and Welfare Organisation (CISWO) for lending us the funds to repair the roof, but we still need to raise the money to repay the loan.
“We hope that with help from our supporters and the community, we can continue to hold events like the Talent Show and raise the funds to refurbish the building.”
