Electric blankets fail safety checks at Blackwood event

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 16:00, Monday November 4th, 2013.

More than 40% of electric blankets failed safety checks at a recent test held by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Trading Standards Service.

More than 40 residents received new free electric blankets following the checks.

Of the 104 electric blankets tested over the two day event in Blackwood, 43 failed and were replaced free of charge with new ones.

The majority of the failures were down to the age of the blanket, while loose connections, exposed elements and insulation features were the cause of other failures.

Manufacturers recommend that electric blankets should be examined and tested every two to three years and should be replaced every ten years, and immediately if they are damaged.
