Residents warned to be vigilant over rug scam

News | Richard Gurner | Published: 08:34, Tuesday November 5th, 2013.

Police are re-appealing for residents to be vigilant following a number of distraction thefts last week and yesterday (Monday).

The incidents involved a man purporting to be a delivery driver. He has attended addresses and told occupants that he had attempted to deliver a rug to their next door neighbour but that they are not home. He then asked the neighbour whether they would take the rug and pay what is owed to him for delivery, suggesting that the occupant get their money back from their neighbour later.

Four incidents occurred on Thursday October 31- in Abersychan, Cwmcarn, Abercarn and Newbridge – and on each occasion the offender has said he was delivering a rug. In two of the incidents the neighbour handed over the £45 the offender said was owed for the delivery. Two further incidents took place on Monday November 4. One in Ponthir where no money was handed over and one in Pontypool where £60 was handed over.

The offender is described as white, mid-20s to 35 years old, stocky or big build, clean shaven, short cropped light brown hair possibly greying. He was described as wearing jeans and a denim shirt and carrying a portfolio with pictures of rugs in it. He mentioned he had travelled from the Swansea area.

Residents are urged to be vigilant of this type of theft and if they have any information or recognise the description they are asked to call Gwent Police on 101 and quote log number 232 31/10/13

If you think this con man is knocking your door rather than call 101 why not ask him to wait outside whilst you find the money and call 999? That way he might be caught red handed.

Nice idea Richard, but do you honestly think the police would respond quickly enough to catch him? I don't.
