Cancer fundraisers thanked at Blackwood’s Maes Manor hotel

Fundraisers who took part in the Valleys ‘Relay for Life’ event last year have been honoured at a presentation evening.

Held recently at Blackwood’s Maes Manor hotel, the evening was organised by local cancer campaigner Bridget McNally MBE to thank those who took part in the event held at Ystrad Mynach’s Sue Noake Leisure Centre in July. Money raised went to Cancer Research UK.

Caerphilly Labour AM Jeff Cuthbert opened the event last July and as a thank you was presented with a pair of boxing gloves signed by Newbridge ring legend Joe Calzaghe.

Mr Cuthbert said: “I was deeply honoured to be handed these gloves at the Relay for Life presentation evening recently.

“I have worked with Bridget for a number of years now and the work she has done raising money to fight cancer is absolutely stellar, especially after all that she has gone through with her health.”

Bridget McNally MBE said: “Jeff attended the first Relay for Life and opened the event as a cancer survivor as well as a local AM. He’s done the same thing ever since and also supported us at the Candle of Hope and Closing ceremonies.

“He joined our Committee in 2008 despite his busy life as an Assembly Member. The fact that he is a cancer survivor gives us massive inspiration.

“These boxing gloves were presented to him for everything that he’s done for me and the Relay.”
