Around 8,000 people attended the fireworks display at Caerphilly Castle on Saturday November 2.

The free event raised £2,600 for children’s charity Shining Stars and the Caerphilly Lions Club.

The annual fireworks display is organised by Caerphilly Town Council with support from Aber Valley; Bedwas, Trethomas and Machen; Llanbradach and Pwllypant; Penyrheol, Trecenydd and Energlyn and Van Community Councils.

Cllr Colin Elsbury, who volunteers in the organisation of the display, said the event was almost cancelled because of the terrible weather.

He said: “The turnout, considering the weather, was excellent. It was horizontal rain.

“For a time it was touch and go whether or not it would go ahead, but there was a lull in the weather which meant we were fine to go.

“The bad weather seemed almost to stop when the fireworks started and began again when we were clearing up. The timing was perfect.

“The only reason we would have cancelled was if the fireworks were too wet, but we had them covered up well.”

• Caerphilly town centre has its Christmas lights switch on on Friday November 22 at 7pm.
