The body of a missing 81-year-old Blackwood man has been found, Gwent Police has said.

Derek Pontin was last seen on Bridge Street, Blackwood between 3.30pm and 4pm on November 7 by a family friend.

Police said a body found in the Pontllanfraith area on Sunday November 17 is believed to be Mr Pontin.

A Gwent Police spokesperson said: “Whilst formal identification has yet to take place officers believe the deceased to be Mr Pontin who had been missing from home for several days.

“There are no suspicious circumstances and officers are currently providing Mr Pontin’s family with support at this difficult time.”

Last week, the family of Mr Pontin, who was said to be very interested in nature, issued an emotional appeal.

In a statement issued on Friday November 15 they said: “We desperately need your help to find a loving brother and uncle.

“We have been overwhelmed by the kindness and sensitivity of Blackwood Police, the general public and neighbours. We would respectively ask everyone if they would be even more vigilant.

“Our uncle is kind, deaf and vulnerable and the family are getting more and more concerned as the days go by.”
