Record numbers of visitors descended on Blackwood town centre over the weekend to enjoy the festive delights at the town’s annual Christmas market.

Caerphilly County Borough Council has said footfall counters recorded a “significant increase” in visitor numbers.

Huw Edwards of Tidal’s Store, said: “We were so busy and had a great weekend of sales so we are thrilled. My father said it was just like the good old days and please can we have an event every weekend.”

Cllr Ken James, Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development, said: “The success of this year’s Blackwood Christmas Market has provided a welcome economic boost to town centre trade. We are always keen to promote our town centres as vibrant, bustling and attractive shopping destinations, and that is exactly what we have seen this weekend.”

This weekend sees the arrival of a Medieval Christmas Fayre in Caerphilly town.

The fayre will see food and craft stalls line the high street and castle walls, with over 120 traders.

This weekend will also see the launch of the council’s Unique Places Christmas Discount Card scheme.

Retailers in the town centres of Bargoed, Blackwood, Caerphilly, Risca and Ystrad Mynach have been signing up to offer special discounts and offers to customers who use the Unique Places Christmas Discount Card between December 7 and 24.

Shoppers can collect a Unique Places Christmas Discount Card from Council Customer First Centres, Libraries and other Council-run attractions including the Visit Caerphilly Centre.
