Heavy rain to continue into Christmas Eve

Natural Resources Wales is asking people to remain vigilant as heavy rain and strong winds will continue to affect Wales into Christmas Eve.

While most parts of Wales will experience heavy rainfall at some point, the worst affected areas are expected to be across the whole of South Wales, West and Mid Wales.

A Natural Resources Wales spokesman said: “Following prolonged periods of heavy rainfall over the weekend, the ground remains saturated, meaning that further rainfall will quickly find its way into rivers and streams.

“There is also a risk that leaves and other debris, brought down by strong winds, will block drains causing flooding of road surfaces.

“People travelling over Christmas are advised to allow extra time as driving conditions may be difficult.”

Large waves caused by the strong winds are expected tomorrow along the west Wales coast and Natural Resources Wales is advising people be careful when out and about.

It is also asking people to take care near fast-flowing and swollen rivers over the holiday period.

People are advised to keep an eye on local weather forecasts for news of any disruption in their area, and are reminded of the dangers of driving through flood water.

Gwent Police have warned motorists to only travel if absolutely necessary.

A spokesperson said: “We appreciate it’s a busy time for travel but please take care on the roads today all, and only make journeys if absolutely necessary.

The following roads are closed or blocked

  • The roundabout at the bottom of Cemetery Road, Ebbw Vale will be closing due to flooding
  • Stable Lane, Tredegar is currently blocked – a car is stuck in 18 inches of water
  • Avoid Beaufort Road, Sirhowy – raised drain/flooding
  • A4048 closed between Blackwood and Tredegar

The spokesperson added: “Although these are only in the Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly areas, we have had issues reported forcewide and the bad weather conditions are set to continue over the next few days.

“If you are venturing out please stick to main roads where possible, avoid rural/isolated lanes, make sure you have your phone charged, have warm and waterproof clothing/blankets in your car as well as food and drink supplies.”
