Emergency crews called to shop fire in Caerphilly town centre

A fire has gutted a shop in Caerphilly town centre.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service was called today at around 10.05am to the fire at Phaze Clothes Shop on Cardiff Road. The shop is opposite the King’s Arm pub and next to Subway and travel agents Thomas Cook.

Crews from Caerphilly, Whitchurch, Pontypridd and Bargoed were at the scene tackling the blaze as well as a hydraulic platform from Cardiff Central station and a water bowser.

The fire, which affected the ground floor, was successfully put out at 11.40am.

A Gwent Police spokeswoman said officers closed Cardiff Road just after 10.05am near the traffic lights by the Malcolm Uphill pub.

There are no reported injuries although residents are being advised to close their windows due to the smoke.

Adrian Barrett, the owner of Subway on Cardiff Road, said: “It’s very worrying. The smoke seems to be coming from around my sign so looks like I’ll have fire damaged stock.

“They’ve done well to contain it, but I’m just worried about my stock and when we can trade. Obviously today’s out but hopefully tomorrow.”

Eyewitness Moya Addicott, from Senghenydd, added: “We were sitting in the Wimpy and a woman came in and said get out, the clothes shop is on fire. It’s terrible.”

A spokesman for South Wales Fire and Rescue said the cause was accidental. The owner of the shop had put on an electric fire which had set a piece of clothing alight.
