Poundstretcher returns to Blackwood

News | Gareth Hill | Published: 15:00, Friday March 21st, 2014.

Councillors have welcomed the return of discount store Poundstretcher to Blackwood.

The town’s original store, in High Street, was demolished after a huge fire last year.

The new store opened at Blackwood Gate on March 21.

Blackwood councillor Nigel Dix said the new store is a welcome boost to the town.

Cllr Tom Williams, who is chair of the Islwyn Constituency Labour Party said: “Following the closure of the Blackwood High Street Poundstretcher store last year, Islwyn Labour are delighted that the company have opened their brand new store at Blackwood Gate.

“Labour promised at the 2012 council elections that if elected, we would review ‘change of use’ planning decisions for the Blackwood Gate site.

“We delivered on that promise and it’s great that Poundstretcher are the first store to take advantage of the change”.

With all due respect to those who feel disappointed that `Poundstetcher` have returned to Blackwood.

The fact that any notable trader is prepared to invest in the Valley Towns must be welcome. Most towns are still declining in respect to the range of traders operating from them, in Caerphilly town for instance, and due largely to Caerphilly council`s planning department, and of course the respective Planning Cabinet Members increasing panic approach to filling empty shops, we have a preponderance of Travel Agents, Estate Agents, Banks Pubs and Charity Shops, Coffee shops, Cafe`s, and Four Chip Shops, THREE "Cash your Gold in" shops,( Where they think the Gold is coming from in this Borough I don`t know), one of these shops offer a `loan` at an APR of 1987%, Penny Arcades, and Opticians, O` and Three Chemists, Seven Hairdressing Salons, and Four `Nail Bars.

So, be grateful Blackwood that someone has enough confidence in the micro Blackwood economy to invest in the town.

I'm also still waiting for the promised Morrisons along with the 150 jobs promised by Labour.

Oh hang on…. "promised by Labour". Should have known better.

Trevor I disagree that poundstretcher is better than nothing. Labour is only interested in Bargoed.
