Young people from Ynysddu gave their green fingers an airing last week by planting trees in an area close to their school to create a new community woodland.
The tree planting event was organised by Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Countryside and Landscape Service and Groundwork on April 3 and 4 to plant trees on an area of land that had been used by local residents for informal recreation, as part of a scheme to improve the area for wildlife.
Pupils from Ynysddu Primary School, students from Ystrad Mynach College and volunteers from Future Steps, a project aimed at getting people skills to get back into work, all gave a helping hand. Community spirited local residents also got involved when they saw the transformation taking place and joined in to help plant the trees behind Glenview Terrace, Ynysddu.
Despite the drizzly, wet weather more than 1,000 trees were planted over the two day period.
Cllr Ken James, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Sustainable Development, said: “By giving schools the chance to get involved in creating this wonderful woodland, the children develop a real sense of ownership over green spaces in their area. Caring for the local environment has a positive effect on the whole community.”
I planted 3 acorns in pots in my back garden. I found them on a grassy area where I work and they had already started sprouting. I intend to grow them for a couple of years and then plant them on the edge of a wooded area behind my home. I suggest everybody do this as it isn’t difficult.
I do suggest you cover them though as the birds braved my 3 cats and ate 2 of them right out of the pots.
They ate the acorns not the cats.
