Staff at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr in Ystrad Mynach have invited the public to an open day at the hospital on Friday June 13 from 10am – 3pm.
The open day will be an opportunity to find out more about the services provided, and to get a glimpse behind the scenes.
Staff representatives from every department in the hospital will be on hand to talk to visitors and guided tours of departments will also be available.
Hospital manager, Trish Edwards, said: “Hospitals can be intimidating places and most people will be unaware of the range of services in Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr unless they actually need them, so I think people will be really surprised.
“Our open day will give the public a great opportunity to pop in and meet the staff and chat informally. We are also hoping that schools will come along too, there are so many careers available in the NHS so youngsters may be interested in finding out more about possible careers.
“People will also get a chance to look behind the scenes in pharmacy, maternity and theatres if these are areas that interest them.”

I’d rather they opened an A & E department. I would be glad to attend such an event.
We need an a&e for goodness sake.
A n E, much needed.
Not a grand tour of a wasted building when caerphilly miners hospital was much better. It just more or less offers out patients appointments, miner injuries and emergency centre which is more like an assessment unit that does not provide emergency critical care. Signs are very miss leading wiv regards to this hospital. Stating emergency centre which it is not!
Miner injuries is exactly the same as oakfield surgery already in Ystrad, offering nothing more, except it’s open 24 hours wiv a g.p out of hours.
What is needed is an A +E and consultant led maternity unit which caerphilly miners did have at one time until services was slowly withdrawn and people only knew they were gone when they went to access them.
This great big expensive hospital is just a great disappointment to all, downgrading hospitals and making people travel further for critical care and specialised services is not the way forward.
NO grand tour is going to make this hospital have what is vitally Needed within this area, there is already big waiting times for ambulances and strain on the bigger hospitals, by having some services in other hospitals surly that will help with waiting times for an ambulance and take the strain of other hospitals.
It was stated in a meeting they didn’t have the staff to stretch across all the hospitals ( specialised staff). THIS was evident back in 2009 when there was no neo natel beds anywhere in Wales and due to not having enough specialised staff to look after the premature babies or the critical care I was one of many who was transfered to another hospital out of Wales and remained there for 3 months until availability was in Wales again.
MY point in all this is, it was evident then the shortage on specialised staff so why wasn’t something done about it then, take on extra staff to train up. the staff that was at caerphilly miners hospital why weren’t they moved up to ystrad to have the facilities that use to be at caerphilly miners. It’s just a waste of money on a glorified doctors surgery which could offer alot more then outpatients and a few wards. Some very sad and unnecessary events have happened at yyf due to lack of services and ambulance waiting times.
So I am sorry but no grand tour is going to make this place what we need it to be an A+E and consultant led maternity unit. NOT having a go at any of the staff who work there just what is needed with a big petition stating we need an A+E and consultant led maternity unit which have already gained a good amount of signatures.
I seen in the newline paper approximately a year ago that more people have attended yyf then caerphilly miners hospital and that would be obvious because yes it does offer outpatient clinics which brings in more people but surly vital services is what is needed not just clinics.
Concern over ambulance waiting times in Caerphilly
No Accident and Emergency in the area, so, wait hours for and ambulance ,and, then be taken for miles and miles to the nearest, overworked and overcrowded A&E, already missing the golden hour so critical for a good recovery from strokes and heart attacks, as an axt of appeasement the Health Board invite us to go to the Ystrad Mynach `Health Health Centre for a guided tour, what is this all about????
Another thing I would like to add – how many people are able to show up on. Friday between 10-3pm the times most people are in work. Another fantastic plan there – should b on a weekend or eight til eight.
Same times when meetings were going on to close caerphilly miners times when people are at work!

Yes, I have seen it, total chaos in Gwent. I live in Caerffili which is not, and never has been, part of Gwent. We live in Glamorgan but have ended up as part of this chaotic system. I really fear that the NHS, the greatest achievement of the Attlee government, is very close to collapse.
