Firefighters walkout in 24-hour strike over pensions

News | | Published: 09:52, Thursday June 12th, 2014.

Firefighters have staged a 24-hour walkout today, starting at 9am, in an ongoing dispute over pensions.

Another strike is also set for Saturday June 21 between 9am and 5pm.

In addition between the two strikes, firefighters will not carry out any voluntary overtime or conduct training of strikebreakers between the beginning of the first strike and 9am on Sunday June 22.

The industrial action is part of a national dispute against UK Government plans to raise firefighters’ retirement age.
The Fire Brigades Union has argued that firefighters in their late 50s face being sacked or seeing their pension reduced by half because of the changes.

The UK Government has now opened consultations on the plans.

The two strikes will be the 13th and 14th over pensions. The first was in September last year.
