A Bedwas pub landlord is celebrating after scooping more than £1 million in the EuroMillions draw on Friday June 13.

The not so unlucky Friday the 13th saw Nigel Willetts, 48, match the Millionaire Raffle number winning him £1million plus two numbers on his Lucky Dip line adding another £2.80 to his impressive prize fund.

Nigel, who owns The Bridgend Inn in Bedwas, checked the EuroMillions results on his phone on Saturday and noticed he matched the first three letters in the raffle. He quickly then realised that the rest of the winning number was his.

After asking his partner, Jane Whittingham, to double check, they both hopped in the car to their local Tesco in Crossways Park where Nigel bought the ticket to ask the cashier to confirm their win.

Nigel said: “I couldn’t believe it, I had to hear it from someone else. I think the checkout lady thought I was joking, but after scanning my ticket she said I had to phone Camelot.”

Once he was sure he had won, Nigel went to his local pub for some celebratory drinks while leaving his winning ticket in a safe place; underneath an ornamental china cat.

After paying off the mortgage on the pub, Nigel – who has four children and two grandchildren – says he plans to get a brand new Range Rover followed by a holiday.

He said: “I went to the Maldives three years ago and I’d love to go back. The children have also put in their requests.”

Overall, Nigel intends to make the money last and says he will be investing it wisely.

Congratulations to him. I hope he does invest it and not waste it like previous lottery winners. Although, going to the press is a sure fire way to receiving begging letters.

Did you even read my comment and did you even read the article? Do you even know the circumstances of past lottery winners? (One winner received 7400 letters a week begging for money) Did you know one lottery winner from last year is now bankrupt?

Reread everything and redraft your comment as at the moment you look a bit silly…

My apologies. I wondered why you had replied to me and not him. I deleted my original comment and I’ll shortly delete this as to not make a mess on this page 🙂

“The rich get richer while the rest of us get poorer.” Yeah cheers for this pointless article.

Not really. Pub landlords are just scraping by at the moment. It the breweries who take the profit.
This is a case of “the poor get richer while the rest of the poor stay the same.”

Good luck to the guy – but I would never have gone public – you’ll get begging letters and probably some resentment and jealousy – but its a great amount and enough to set yo up for life at his age! PS can I have some??!!
