Two men have been commended by police after they went to the aid of a cyclist who was involved in a road accident.

Denys Cronin and Garry Fuller were first on the scene at the fatal collision in Abertridwr on January 23 this year..
The pair were handed the Gwent Good Citizen Award at Gwent Police’s annual awards.

The cyclist, Evan Dennis Hughes, died but the pair’s actions and support were commended by the ambulance service.

Others honoured at the awards, held last month, included PC Rhys Caddick, 29, of Blackwood and PC Greg Eustace, 34, of South Wales Police Firearms Unit, who were commended for rescuing residents from a burning building in July last year.

The Gareth Hopkins Memorial Award was presented to Community Support Officer Sue Falconer, of Blackwood, who returned to work after the amputation of her lower right leg after just five months.

Lewis Barry, of Caerphilly, was given a Cadet of the Year award for volunteering 1,000 hours.
