A revamped Bedwas shop will replace some of its Welsh language signs after shoppers noticed they featured Scottish Gaelic words.
Bedwas Co-operative store reopened last week after a £360,000 refit. The company has said the four incorrect signs will be replaced shortly.
Welsh language tutor Jonathan Ford spotted the signs in the shop and said they made him laugh.
He told BBC Wales: “They cracked me up. It [the store] has had a refit while I was away and I couldn’t find where anything was.
“I am looking at all the signs and I thought ‘that doesn’t look right’ and I got to the next one and thought ‘that’s not right’.
“After a while I twigged that it must be something like Scottish or Irish Gaelic.
“I spoke to the people working and asked who did their signs and nobody had noticed, which is probably even worse than getting it wrong.
“It thought it was funny but some people will get cross.”
A spokesperson for The Co-operative Food, said: “We are thrilled to have made such a significant investment in Bedwas in order to redefine and transform our food store for the community.
“We have been made aware that unfortunately, a small number of the signs inside the store are incorrect – relaunching the new-look store is both an exciting and busy time and this mix-up by our suppliers had been missed.
“We will remove these signs, and replace them as soon as possible, and we would like to thank the customer for pointing this out.”
The revamped Co-operative Food store was reopened on July 24.
To celebrate the opening of the Church Street store, members of BTM United Football Club’s newly established Under 7s side and representatives of Caerphilly Children’s Centre, Energlyn, shared celebrity status on the day and helped to cut the ribbon to declare the new-look food store open.
Darren Coldman, Store Manager, said on the reopening day: “I am delighted that BTM United U7s football team were able to join us.
“We are proud to sponsor their first ever kit – and that representatives from Caerphilly Children’s Centre, Energlyn, could come along too to share in our special day.”
